Training and Certification

Dear Friends and Fellow ISST Members –-

I am pleased to announce that the new guidelines for certification are now complete and will be going into effect following our general assembly meeting in Berlin this July 2010. (See attachment on your ListServ document - to be copied and pasted here soon)
This has been a long and thoughtful process, derived from many hours of dialogue among the board members and committee members, careful scrutiny of details, shared discussions with some of our most experienced trainers and supervisors – worldwide, along with helpful observations, experiences, and input from candidates who have participated in schema therapy certification training programs in recent years.

Taking all of this into account, my fellow board members and I, give you the new guidelines. We hope you will find that they clearly indicate, and elaborate on, expectations and content requirements for both trainees and supervisors.
Please be aware that these guidelines and the STCRS pertain to
“individual certification programs” – ST with individuals and couples.
The committee is currently in the process of designing specific guidelines and a clinical competency rating scale for schema therapy with groups.

On Thursday, July 8th 2010 – I will be facilitating a full-day workshop on Supervision and the Standardized Rating of Tapes as part of the pre-congress workshops in Berlin.
In response to the many inquiries and concerns regarding “defining the roles for trainers/supervisors in a certification training program”, we are proposing that beginning July 2010, this curriculum seminar will be mandatory for all Trainers and Supervisors who are conducting Certification Training Programs in Schema Therapy.
Meaning that, anyone who is facilitating an ISST approved certification training program, and/or providing supervision for certification – including session raters – will need to complete this seminar. For those who are unable to attend the workshop in Berlin, it will be offered, throughout the coming year, as a Skype seminar and, whenever possible, on-site. (There will be a small fee for this mandatory program.)

The goal of the newly added trainers/supervisors program:

  • enhance quality assurance within our programs
  • promote balance, uniformity, and comprehensive coverage of required material
  • maintain the stability and integrity of our model, especially for the purpose of fostering reliable outcome studies in ST
  • provide an overall sense of clear and effective expectations for supervisors and trainers, as well as offer support to them in their roles

I hope you will be able to join me in Berlin, and if not, on Skype – dates to be announced soon. Some of the curriculum is illustrated in the “notes” section of the 2010 Guidelines.

On behalf of the ISST board, we hope you have already registered for the sure-to-be exciting and inspiring ISST 3-Day Event in Berlin! If not, there is still time to do so.
Please go to: www.isst-online.com to register.
In addition to the many wonderful programs being offered, we look forward to saying hello to many dear friends and colleagues; and to meeting new ones too!

We welcome your thoughts!
But, in an effort to not overwhelm everyone’s e-mail…
PLEASE reply to me personally at:
wetb@aol.com or wendybehary@aol.com
Or...feel free to respond on the "blog" page.
I will be sure to share your comments with my fellow board members and with the society at large, when requested, and if relevant to others.

Warmest Wishes –
Wendy

To become an ISST-certified Schema Therapist on the standard or advanced level you have to pass a training according to the ISST-requirements you find here. To rate the competence of a schema therapist, a schema therapy competency rating scale (STCRS) has been created, that you find here. Click here for the application forms.

Everyone interested in achieving schema therapy certification status is now required to meet the 2009 guidelines for certification. Look here for Approved Training Programs and for Reading Materials and Videos, Power Point Trainings and Training Inventories.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding approved training programs and/or schema therapy certification.

Warm Regards -
Wendy
